When your child wakes up in pain, every parent feels that instant wave of panic.
Thatās exactly what happened to us.
One morning, my daughter got out of bed and immediately started crying. She couldnāt put weight on her foot. When we looked closer, we saw something shocking ā a large, dark, swollen spot on the bottom of her foot. It looked almost black and felt tight and raised. We had no idea what it was.
Was it a bite? An infection? Something more serious?
If youāve ever found a sudden swelling like this on your childās foot, you know how scary it can feel. Hereās what we learned ā and what you should know if this ever happens to someone in your family.
What Is a Large Dark Swelling on the Foot?
In many cases, a sudden dark, raised spot on the sole of the foot is a blood blister or a deep bruise (hematoma).
Unlike regular blisters that are filled with clear fluid, blood blisters form when small blood vessels under the skin break due to pressure or friction. Blood gets trapped beneath the skin, creating a dark red, purple, or even black appearance.
On the bottom of the foot, this can look dramatic because the skin there is thick and tough. The pressure from standing or walking can make the blister swell even more ā and thatās where the pain comes from.
Why Would This Happen Overnight?
One of the most confusing parts is that it sometimes appears āout of nowhere.ā
Common causes include:
-
Tight or poorly fitted shoes
-
Long periods of walking or running
-
Minor trauma (even something your child doesnāt remember)
-
Jumping or landing hard on one spot
-
Friction from sports or playground activity
Children especially may not mention small injuries, but the body still responds.
If pressure builds up under thick foot skin, the trapped blood has nowhere to go ā so it forms a large dome-like swelling.
